For centuries, whispers of the Head Overturning Rite have intrigued scholars, mystics, and members of the transgender community alike. Was there truly an ancient Mesopotamian ritual, performed in the temple of Inanna, that transformed men into women and women into men?
This groundbreaking work cuts through the myths and mistranslations to uncover the real history behind the Head Overturning Rite. More than just a historical investigation, this book also offers a contemporary reimagining of the ritual, allowing it to be reclaimed and practiced in the modern world.
Third Expanded Edition Out Now!
On the 27th March 2013, The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science posted a meme to their Facebook Group stating that the Anglo-Saxon Goddess Eostre, and Easter, had their origins in the Goddess Astarte (or Ishtar). This meme was met swiftly with fury and derision. For the next decade people would attempt to debunk all links between Astarte, Ishtar and Eostre.
However, therein lies the problem. An academic investigation into the subject shows that Astarte’s worship was not just prevalent in the “Middle East” but into Egypt, across Northern Africa, through ancient Greece and Rome, up to Germania, across Europe, in Iberia, and even into Britain. In search of the Near Eastern origins of Hekate, we encounter a far older figure, one who straddles heaven and underworld, life and death, mercy and wrath.
The goddess Gula rises from the sands of the ancient Near East, born at the crossroads of two great cultures, Sumer and Elam, emerging from the Trans-Tigris region, a mysterious land known for its chthonic and serpentine cults. She bears many names: Bau, Nintinugga, Ninisina, Azugallatu, Belet Balati. Each is a distinct facet of the Many-Faced Goddess and a reflection of her immense power and influence.
More than a goddess of healing, she was Guardian of Thresholds, Mistress of Curses, Mother of Resurrection, the Mighty She-Goat of Heaven, and a figure of divine judgment whose rites shaped both temple medicine and royal authority. Her sacred animals were dogs. Among her symbols were serpents and stars.
For Gula was never merely a goddess of healing. She was a storm goddess of bones and breath, a judge of kings and demons, the flame beneath the crossroads, and the veiled mother of stars. Her myths, rites, and names remain etched into the foundations of magic, medicine, and ritual power.
To speak her names is to awaken her.
